The holidays are here! This season is the perfect time to get dressed up and show off your most glamorous style. Whether you're headed to a work holiday party or hosting a virtual holiday gathering, it's important to choose something festive that reflects your personality and makes you feel fabulous! You've probably had your stunning outfit selected for weeks now, but how will you style your hair? An exciting hairstyle is a cherry on top of a gorgeous holiday outfit, and it doesn't have to be difficult! We're here to break down our top three favorite holiday hairstyles that you can achieve yourself at home.
Sleek & Sexy Hairstyle - Fully Down
If you're searching for the most effortless hairstyle for your holiday gathering, a sleek and sexy fully-down hairstyle might be your new go-to look. This hairstyle is easily achieved with a blow drier and flat iron; bonus points if you add some shine wax and light-hold hairspray to top this look off! The key to achieving this hairstyle is smoothing from the roots down. The more control you have from the beginning, the easier this look will be to achieve. While you are not required to blow your hair dry, it will definitely make your life easier in the long run, especially if your hair is prone to frizz!
In order to best execute this fabulous look, it's most important to focus on smoothing your roots. When blow drying, start at your roots and work your way down the hair shaft; this can be done using a flat paddle brush or a round brush. Once your hair is fully dry, whip out your flat iron and straighten your hair starting at your roots and working your way down the hair shaft. If you skip your roots and only flat iron from mid-shaft to ends, you'll actually create more frizz.
To finish off this look, use shiny and smoothing wax (our favorite is Rusk: being warped). Apply a small amount (think the size of your pinky nail or smaller) of wax to your palm and rub your hands together until the product is evenly dispersed. It's best to start with less product and build up as needed, once you start working your hair if you feel like you need to add more, use small amounts until you feel your hair is evenly covered. Starting at your roots, run your hands and fingers through your hair and work your way down your hair shaft. Wax not only will enhance this sleek and sexy hairstyle by adding shine, but it will also assist in combatting frizz and other natural elements that could potentially "dent your do". Finally, lightly and evenly spray your hair with a light-hold hairspray, again, starting at your roots and directing downward. (We love Sebastian Shaper Plus!)
Sleek & Sexy Hairstyle - Fully Up
If you're feeling adventurous and want to go the extra mile with an updo or ponytail, here's what you need to do! In addition to the products and procedures mentioned in "Sleek & Sexy Hairstyle - Fully Down" above, you will also need rubber bands, hair ties, and bobby pins.
Once you have completed the steps in the section above, begin brushing your hair back and aim the brush toward where you would like your bun or ponytail to sit. (If you want a higher bun/pony, aim high, if you want a low bun/pony, aim low.) Create a ponytail once your hair is fully smoothed and you've gained control, and wrap an elastic or hair tie around your pony. If you're ending with a pony, cleanly section a small piece from your ponytail and wrap it around the base of your ponytail, so as to hide the elastic used.
From here, you can easily create a low chic bun. Simply braid the ponytail and then wrap it around the base of your ponytail to create a bun. Secure it with bobby pins until you feel it is fully secured to your head, et voila! If braids aren't your thing, you can also twist your hair and then wrap your ponytail and fasten it. The more control you maintain when braiding, twisting, and securing, the cleaner the finished product will be.
Voluminous Curls
Curls can be intimidating, but with practice, you too can achieve killer bombshell curls at home. A few things to keep in mind when curling your hair:
The bigger the barrel the bigger the curl, and vice versa. If you are using a larger curling iron or wand (1 & 1/2"<), you will end up with larger curls or waves. If you are using a smaller curling iron or wand (1">), you will end up with tighter curls.
The direction in which you curl your hair will also affect the final results. The most popular curl pattern we see is to curl hair away from your face; this means curling the left side of your head and wrapping to the left, and the opposite on the right side, wrapping to the right.
The more control you maintain, the cleaner your finished product will be. We recommend starting with small sections beginning at the nape and working your way up to the front of your head. Section out and secure any sections that you are not working in yet.
Once your curls are complete, brush through with your fingers or with a paddle brush. The more you brush, the fluffier your curls and final hairstyle will be. If your hair does not hold curls well, we recommend waiting for this step until you're about to head out for your event!
