Things No One Tells You About Professional Makeup Applications

September 15, 2022

When having your makeup done professionally, there’s a lot more to the experience than just sitting in the chair and waiting for the magic to happen! To make your wedding day makeup process as smooth as possible for both you and your makeup artist, we’ve asked our team of incredibly experienced makeup artists to compile some of their best makeup tips for brides! Here are a few things your makeup artist won’t necessarily tell you, but are oh-so helpful to keep in mind!

Prepare & Minimize Distractions

We highly recommend taking the time you spend in your artist's makeup chair to relax, enjoy, and give your makeup artist your full attention! Hopefully, you received a pre-wedding makeup trial, so you and your artist have an idea of the makeup look you’re wanting for your wedding day! This is one way to majorly take some stress off of you (and your makeup artists!) plate. (It’s totally okay if you don’t schedule a pre-wedding trial, our artists are 100% comfortable creating on the fly, we just can’t help but recommend them!)

Before you take your seat, be sure to eat, brush your teeth, put in your contacts, and have a straw ready so you’re able to stay hydrated throughout your makeup session. Have your makeup inspiration photos pulled up and ready to share with your artist! If you are a bridesmaid or MOH and you are in charge of steaming dresses, please handle all steaming before you receive your makeup (and hairstyling!) services.

Additionally, it’s beneficial to try to avoid distractions like constant movement, checking your phone, or eating. The less you move, the more precise and flawless your makeup application will be, which greatly increases the longevity of your makeup look!

Makeup Artists’ Directions

Your makeup artist might give you specific instructions, such as keeping your eyes closed, looking up, or tilting your head. These directions are essential for applying makeup smoothly and accurately! Again, simple preparations like brushing your teeth and putting in contacts before the session begins will majorly contribute to an efficient makeup application. If you wait until after your makeup session to, for example, brush your teeth, this could cause your face makeup to crease or smear, and extra makeup corrections could negatively impact the getting ready timeline.

If you’re feeling emotional, try to get any tears out before services start to avoid smudging your makeup! (We know, this is much easier said than done!) Q-tips and tissues are fabulous tear tools to keep on hand to catch any and all tears; ask your makeup artist how to use these tools effectively to combat your happy tears!

Have Realistic Expectations

While professional makeup can do wonders, it’s very important to have realistic expectations! The goal is to enhance your natural beauty, not to transform you into someone else entirely. Discuss your desired look with your artist and always remember, the best makeup simply highlights your unique features! Embrace your individuality and trust your artist to bring out your best and most confident self! We want you to feel like yourself, just that you spent an extra 15 minutes getting ready that day.

Professional Makeup Artists Timing

Considering your makeup artist’s time and protocols is truly crucial (and much appreciated!), especially on wedding days with tight timelines. Arrive on time and follow any preparation guidelines our makeup artists provide! Your artist is not only focused on making you look and feel fabulous but also ensuring that you and your bridal party stay perfectly on (or ahead of!) schedule. Punctuality helps everyone remain calm and stress-free, making the entire getting ready experience so much more enjoyable!

Communicate Your Preferences

Never hesitate to speak up if you would like any adjustments or more or less product in certain areas. We promise, no feelings will be hurt on our end. Your makeup artist wants you to love your look, not just like it! Communication is key to achieving the perfect result. Whether it’s adding more blush or toning down the eyeshadow, your feedback is always invaluable! Remember that your artists are here for you and to help bring out your shine.
